Defend first, punish second
Apostate Verity combat is easier to learn if you treat defense as the default state. Do not rush every opening. Watch the enemy, survive the pattern, then punish after the recovery window is clear.
Before you start
Read the Controls and keybinds guide first. Combat advice is not useful if your dodge, block, or parry input is uncomfortable.
Step-by-step checkpoints
- Block or dodge the first version of a new attack before trying to counter.
- Learn which attacks are safe to parry and which should be dodged.
- Spend stamina deliberately; empty stamina usually turns one mistake into two.
- Punish after the enemy animation ends, not when the attack first starts.
- If a boss has a purple or special attack, treat it as a dodge signal until proven otherwise.
Common mistakes and fixes
- Attacking first in every exchange: wait for a clear recovery window.
- Parrying every animation: separate parryable hits from dodge-only attacks.
- Panic rolling: dodge once, reset position, then read the next move.
- Ignoring stamina: leave enough stamina for one defensive input.
Clear checklist
- You can name the enemy attack before reacting.
- You know your safest defense against each pattern.
- You punish only after recovery begins.
- You stop attacking when stamina drops too low.
Extra notes
Once the basics feel consistent, move to the Tree Boss guide. Keep that page for pattern help, not for your first blind attempt.
